Abstract

The visual aspects of highway safety are reviewed and a number of recommendations made. Visual acuity is discussed in connection with driver vision and driver licensing. Peripheral vision, color vision and night vision are discussed in relation to vehicle visibility, school buses, and emergency vehicles. Because of the many visual problems detailed, every vehicle should be as conspicuous as possible. Head-lights, tail-lights and signal-lights are discussed from this aspect. Specified signal intensities used by the Society of Automotive Engineers in setting signal specifications and standards are described. Recommendations are made for a superior visibility location for turn signals.
