Abstract

The term accident is widely used both in everyday language and in scientific research. However, there is no consensus on its use. Its connotations of chance and unpredictability have prompted many public health professionals to discourage use of the term.

This paper outlines the ongoing debate in the field of scientific research and literature, and presents alternatives for the term accident.

Vernacular Abstract

El uso del término accidente está muy extendido tanto en la lengua corriente como en el ámbito de la investiga­ ción científica. Sin embargo, se han planteado serias objeciones a su uso. La connotación de imprevisibilidad y aleatoriedad implícita en el término ha llevado a muchos profesionales de la salud pública a evitar su uso.

Este trabajo pretende recoger el debate generado en el ámbito de la investigación y de la literatura científica, así como presentar alternativas al uso de dicho vocablo.
