Abstract

The aim of this essay is to provide a semantic analysis of landscape experience in highways. Definitions of the meaning of space as it applies to the psychology of vision are analysed and the problem of perceptions inherent to topographical space is discussed. This presentation is based upon manipulative meanings exemplified in the traditional manner of appreciating classical Japanese landscape painting. The author concludes that virtual or imaginative behavior in space is of major significance in dealing with the problems of meaning. Finally, the relationship between symbolic meaning and the landscape experienced along highways and its perspective image, is discussed.
