Abstract

This article describes low-cost, low-tech strategies for encouraging schools and parents to adopt measures under the Safe Routes to School program. They rely on soliciting meaningful involvement by parents and school administrators on matters such as timing the start and end of the school day, coordinating school bus routes with other routine scheduled users like trash pickup and street cleaning, and asking parents for suggestions through existing institutions like the PTA. Included is a link to a Web site developed by the Marin County Bicycle Coalition that has a toolkit: www.saferoutestoschool.org.
