Abstract

There is an ethnic group in the United States which is increasinlg in impor-tance. Study of this group is hindered, however, because of a lack of coordination among social scientists. A variety of etlhniic labels are applied by social scientists to those who have ancestral ties to Mexico. This is found in official census data as well, where changes in terminology and classification appear frequently. Such a situation is unfortunate for it makes the study of this ethnic group more problematic. In order to facilitate comparisons between studies and to aid in the accumulation of a I)odv of knowledge, it is imperative that some agreemenit be reached amnong social scientists and a common terminology be adopted.
