Abstract

In Chicago and St. Louis, movies were made of the behavior of traffic in the right lane of freeways as it approached a vehicle parked on the right shoulder. The data thus obtained was used to study whether a general model to predict the magnitude of lateral displacement in that situation could be developed that would apply to more than one metropolitan area. Multiple regression analysis was then applied, and independently predictive models were obtained for each area as well as for the combined data to obtain a general model. The results obtained indicate that different metropolitan areas vary so widely in traffic regulations, location, size, land use, etc. as to preclude the use of a general all purpose model as opposed to models specially tailored to a given metropolitan area.
