Abstract

A simple quantitative model that could be used by planners and engineers for predicting the pedestrian volume from land use data in the core of the CBD was developed. The study emphasized the selection of variables that could be quantified and obtained without difficulty from the existing data bank of a city. Quantifiable independent variables used in the study included: commercial space; office space; cultural and entertainment space; manufacturing space; residential space; parking space; vacant space; and storage and maintenance space. The dependent variable used was the pedestrian volume per hour per block. The data collection and model formulation and evaluation are outlined. The application of the models in practice is demonstrated by an example. A stepwise regression technique was used to discriminate and enter into the model the most significant land use variables that affected pedestrian volume.
