Abstract

A retroreflectometer designed for use in the field was tested for performance, durability, and ease of operations under conditions of: temperature ranges of 0-38 degrees C (32-100 degrees F), low and high relative humidity, and both bright sunlight and cloudy lighting conditions. Measurements taken with it were compared with those done by D retroreflectometer used in the laboratory. Varying environmental conditions of lighting, temperature, and relative humidity found in Pennsylvania did not adversely affect the performance of the device. As a result, it will be used by the Pennsylvania DOT to measure the initial specific luminance values of sheeting materials for compliance with its specification for sheet-reflective materials and to determine when highway signs should be replaced.
