Abstract

During the past years important evolutions in the postvention field have emerged. An important step was the establishment in 1999 of the Taskforce Postvention of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP). Aim of the Taskforce is to increase the awareness for survivors after suicide and suicide bereavement within IASP and its allies. Strategies developed include the publication of international Directories of Suicide Survivor Services and to hold open meetings during major suicidology conferences. The current seminar is yet another if not historical step, as it is the first truly international conference devoted to postvention. The seminar brings together survivors, caregivers and researchers, and offers a platform for dialogue. Selected experts will introduce specific topics: Prof. Annette Beautrais (research questions), Prof. Onja Grad (clinical issues), Mrs. Elisabeth Brockmann (survivor support) and Mrs. Sue Simkin (bereavement materials). These introductions are followed by subgroup discussions, thus allowing participants to fully engage in the discussion and to bring in their expertise and experiences. The seminar will conclude with recommendations for future developments.
