Abstract

In the winter of 2009-2010, the SnowSport Safety Foundation conducted a detailed survey of safety practices used on trails and slopes at 25 California mountain resorts. This paper describes the methodology used to conduct these surveys and the criteria for scoring the results. The final results were presented in a report titled the California Mountain Resort Safety Report (Report), which was published on the Foundation's website in February 2011 (the full text is available at www.snowsportsafetyfoundation.org). During the field survey, data were collected from observations of impact protection and trail design and maintenance practices. These observations were then scored and presented in the Report using bar charts for resort comparisons. Resort boundaries, terrain park practices, and other safety considerations were also surveyed and presented in the Report but were not scored. The Report showed that the consistency of trail and slope safety measures used at one mountain resort often varied greatly from those used at another and were usually inconsistent within resorts as well.
