Abstract

The significance of the 'Soixante-Quinze', the French 75 mm Modele 1897 field gun, one of the most famous guns of the Great War, is examined. The technical features that made the 75 revolutionary are summarized, including ammunition, breech mechanism, mounting and sighting. Its development is described and its deployment in the field. Full specifications are given in an appendix.
