Abstract

Many different scientific disciplines invoke the term "risk". Particularly in the context of delinquent behavior, this raises the question of how risks can be measured, what effects they may have, and, maybe most importantly, how we can deal with these risks. The present study proposes a definition of the notion of risk in the context of criminology; it will also examine - on a micro level - the meaning of "risks" for an individual person and her actions. On a macro level, formal approaches of considering risks in the criminal justice systems will be examined with a particular focus on sociological aspects. In this discussion, it becomes apparent that different scientific disciplines (psychology, forensic psychiatry, sociology and criminal law) have generated different insights on how to manage the delinquency risks. Yet, these insights are often only discussed in different streams of research and haven't yet been integrated. Although criminology as an interdisciplinary scientific discipline would be particularly suited to study the notion of "risk", a "risk criminology" has not yet been developed.
