Abstract

The purposes of this research were to determine the predictors of juvenile delinquency, to develop a practical system for early identification of its causes, and to determine the extent to which youngsters' contacts with law enforcement agencies could be predicted over an eight-year period. The subjects were children in grades three, six, and nine who had been nominated by teachers as displaying aggressive-disruptive or socially approved behavior. The criterion to be predicted was contact with law enforcement agencies. While all criterion data were collected eight years after the original nomination and collection of predictor data, the actual dates of contact with law enforcement agencies varied from as little as one year to as long as eight years after the original nomination. Predictive accuracies ranging from 69% to 79% were achieved using stepwise multiple discriminant function analysis.
