Abstract

The Competency Screening Test was administered to a group of unfit patient/defendants at the time of their scheduled evaluation by court-appointed psychiatrists. The overall agreement between the test scores and the psychiatric evaluations was 82%. The percentages of false positives and false negatives obtained in this study agreed closely with those reported in the original validation study of the instrument. The data support the conclusion that the test may be a useful tool in the assessment of fitness to stand trial.
