Abstract

The increasing annual number of road traffic accidents on the Ghanaian road network is a serious concern to the government and the citizenry as a whole. Accidents entail not only economic cost, but also the social cost of pain, grief and suffering of families of the victims. Establishing the cost of road traffic accidents thus creates the compelling need for investments in road safety measures in road design improvements, education campaigns, enforcement activities and research. Using the Human Capital approach, the study aimed at establishing a realistic estimate of the cost of road traffic accidents to the national economy as well as to obtain the unit cost of road traffic accidents by severity class based on the year 2004 accident figures.
