Abstract

In this three-part paper the authors report a series of investigations into the effects of varying systematically the intensity distribution of high-pressure and low-pressure sodium lanterns in a conventional street lighting installation with a staggered arrangement. Part I is devoted to an analysis of terms used to describe the intensity distribution of a lantern and the performance of an installation. Part II describes the lanterns and the computer techniques used in these investigations and reports the relationships found between intensity distribution and installation performance. Part III outlines field measurements and appraisals undertaken in support of the computer exercise and discusses the overall results and the implications.
