Abstract

Preschool children are especially vulnerable to accidents/injuries in home, school, and community settings. This article presents the results of a survey that asked parents and teachers to report the frequency of various accidents/injuries of their preschool children or students, respectively. Parents reported most accidents/injuries were due to falling over objects, falling due to ice or water, inappropriate use of toys/materials, slipping in the bathtub, and inappropriate response to strangers. Teachers reported most accidents/injuries were due to mishaps involving playground equipment, inappropriate use of toys/materials, and falling due to objects, ice, or water. Information collected from this survey should increase our awareness of childhood injury and may serve as a basis for the development of safety skills curricula for young children.
