Abstract

We investigated the influence of a potential EO on the self-injurious behavior (SIB) of a 12-year-old male with severe mental retardation. This study was conducted in two phases: functional analysis and treatment.

RESULTS of the functional analysis indicated that SIB was maintained by escape from demands and access to an activity (listening to music). In the treatment phase, we examined the effects of the presence and absence of music, a putative EO, on SIB during the demand condition.

RESULTS indicated that the presence of music was correlated with a reduced rate of SIB during the demand condition. Some possible mechanisms by which music affected SIB are discussed.
