Abstract

Information reported about children with prenatal cocaine exposure has been contradictory and has virtually excluded study of children in applied settings. This study assessed 8 children with a history of prenatal cocaine exposure (high risk group) and 8 peers with no such history (low risk group) in the same preschool setting using ecobehavioral and standardized measures. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups on multiple behavioral variables. Language assessments showed no statistically significant differences between groups. Conditional probability analyses revealed higher levels of passive behavior in a few contexts for the high risk group. Questions remain about the long-term effects of cocaine exposure on children and differences in passive and active behaviors that have important educational implications.
