Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of a Re-ED residential program with a sample of highly aggressive youth, and assessed client characteristics that may be predictive of treatment outcome. Twenty-five children and adolescents were assessed at entry and discharge from the treatment program. Dependent measures included staff ratings of youths' behavioral problems, a self-image measure, and a measure of academic achievement. Significant improvements were found in evening staff ratings of the residents' hostility and anger arousal, in the residents' academic achievement in certain areas, and in residents' perceptions of their mastery over their environment. Day staff ratings did not indicate significant change. Initial ratings by day and evening staff were found to be predictive of improvement, with ratings of greater anxiety and depression being most associated with reductions in behavior problems. Limitations of the study are discussed.
