Abstract

Parents were taught to apply basic behavior modification procedures to control two problem behaviors of their autistic child. All parent training was conducted in the home, with parents assuming responsibility for selecting target responses, recording data, and implementing procedures. In Study I, reinforcement and time-out procedures were used to eliminate excessive running. In Study II , screaming was reduced through reinforcement and a mild reprimand. Each study reported maintenance of treatment effects during follow-ups ranging from one to seven months. At the conclusion of training parents reported an increase in positive attitude toward their child.
