Abstract

Large scale wars such as the Japanese Invasion of Korea or the Second Manchu Invasion of Korea brought about reorganization notonly of the military system but also of the weapon system, which had stressed bow and arrow, to Choson military, and firearm was at the center of this reorganization. After the wars,machlock musket was assigned as the basic firearm of Choson military, and this introduction of machlock musket had a great meaning in that it resulted in the fundamental change of Choson military tactics and also influenced the drastic reform of the military system. Due to introduction of machlock musket to the world as well as Choson and East Asia, the early ruling class-centered combat groups were changed to those consisting of farmers and general people. In regarding to the its importance in military history, researchers in Japan and Korea had studied introduction and management of machlock musket,and changes ofmilitary systems, tactics, and society. Researches in Korea started from manufacturing and introduction of machlock musket in the late Choson dynasty and advanced to weapon systems and tactics. Lately, some researches dealt with the aspect of military changes caused by introduction of machlock musket. Besides,there were also researches looking atthe weapon system changesof Choson in the perspective ofproduct exchange or political use. Therefore,the main purpose of this article is to examine advanced researches related to machlock musket, which was the major firearm of the weapon system of the Choson Dynasty. Vernacular Abstract

임진왜란과 병자호란 등 대규모 전쟁의 결과는 조선군에게 군사제도의 편성뿐만 아니라 기존 弓矢를 중시하였던 무기체계의 개편을 가져오게 하였는데, 그 개편의 중심이 火器였다. 전쟁 이후 조선후기 군병의 기본 화기가 鳥銃으로 편성되었는데 조총의 도입은 조선의 전술상의 근본적인 변화를 가져옴은 물론,군사체제의 급격한 개편에도 지대한 영향을 미쳤다는 점에서 의의가 적지 않다. 조총을 도입한 조선뿐만 아니라 조총이 탄생한 유럽에서 시작하여 동아시아에서도 귀족을 비롯한 지배층이 중심이 되던 전투 집단이 조총의 도입으로 농민과 일반인 체제로 개편되는 세계사적인 변화를 야기하였다. 이러한 군사사적 중요성으로 인하여 일본과 한국을 중심으로 조총의 도입과운용,군사제도․전술․사회적 변화 양상에 관한 연구가 상당히 이루어졌다. 국내 연구의 경우,조선후기 조총의 제조 및 도입에 대한 연구에서 시작되어무기체계 및 전술과 관련한 연구로 진행되었다.최근에는 조총의 도입에 따른군사적 변화 양상을 다룬 성과가 나타났다.이외에도 조총의 도입으로 인한 조선의 무기체계의 변화를 동아시아의 문물교류라는 관점에서 바라보는 연구와정치적 활용이라는 의미로 인식한 연구도 발표되었다. 본 논문에서는 조선시대 군사사 속에서 무기체계의 주요한 화기였던 조총과그에 관련한 연구 성과를 살펴보면서 조선후기 조총에 대한 그간의 연구 현황을 정리하고자 한다. 주제어 : 조총, 포수, 火器, 전술, 군사제도, 무기체계, 문물교류
