Abstract

Injury is a global health problem, and in the United States, it is the leading cause of death for persons aged 1 to 44 years. In 2014, unintentional injuries were responsible for 136,053 deaths in the United States and an additional 29 million injuries involved an ED visit.1 The 2 most frequently seen causes of unintentional injury death are head injury and hemorrhage. These types of injuries result in death at the scene in approximately 60% of all unintentional injury cases. The remainder of unintentional injury deaths occur once the patient has reached the hospital.
