Abstract

“Legal intervention deaths” of civilians — cases in which someone is killed by a law-enforcement or other peace officer while that officer is on duty — and occupational homicides of law-enforcement officers have garnered increasing attention in the United States, owing to numerous recent high-profile incidents. These events are not only devastating to the victims’ families and the directly affected communities or neighborhoods; they also erode the relationship between law-enforcement agencies and the diverse populations they serve.
