Abstract

The mental and physical health consequences of sexual violence in academia, both short and long term, can be devastating and life changing. While sexual violence at any point in life is traumatic, vistimization while in college has the added potential to derail one's opportunity for higher education and adversely impact career aspirations an academic performance.

Hisotrically, sexual violence on campus was largely handles in an informal capacity by administrators. To avoid tarnishing the school's reputation and negatiely affecting student enrollment, administrators were likely to quietly sweep sexual violence under the rug, thereby silencing its victime.
