Abstract

On Good Friday I watched a nurse colleague resuscitate a man at a football match in front of thousands of people. It was a high pressure situation but to a colleague with thirty years' experience it was a calm and ordered intervention. The outcome was a good one for the patient and the process seemed effortless-belying the skill and expertise needed to do it. The environment is a difficult one-with plenty of decisions to make and risks to manage in addition to delivering care-all done with expertise and compassion. In other safety critical industries I have worked with, it's considered axiomic to have the highest level of expertise close to the areas of risk-keep the most experienced and skilled workers on the frontline. It's safer, more productive and cost effective. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
