Abstract

The core-part of the construction of the tram line number 2 in the city of Ulm is an engineering structure, which is designed as a combined tram-and road-bridge and leads the traffic as an extremely slim, semi-integral steel bridge over a high-frequency inner-city railway terrain. The bridge design was awarded after a realization-competition and selected for execution. The superstructure cross-section is divided into two parts. The separation between the pedestrian and bicycle travel area and the roadway is carried out by a main girder which is partly designed as a plate girder and partly as a truss girder. The design of this beam is adapted to the flow of the moments and creates a particular charisma of the structure. The monolithic connection of the steel deck with the supporting steel columns and the conventional bearings in the area of the abutments is generating the statically relevant semi-integral superstructure. The special urban erection situation with the use of: -a temporary assembly platform -the approx. 15 m high columns of the final structure -a temporary launching nose and the elimination of a large number of auxiliary supports creates interesting statically structural conditions. It was possible to assemble the structure in an extremely short construction period, and to limit the influence on the railway traffic under the assembly area.
