Abstract

Few falls studies exist in Asian developing nations. Our aim is to determine the characteristics of fall recurrence in urban, community-dwelling older adults in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Falls Assessment and Intervention Trial (MyFAIT; ISRCTN11674947) is a randomised-controlled trial evaluating the effects of multifactorial interventions on individuals 65 years and older, with two or more falls or one injurious fall in the past 12 months. Participants with dementia were excluded. Participants randomised to the intervention group received individually-tailored interventions which comprised of Otago exercises, visual correction, footwear advice, medication review, home hazards assessment and cardiovascular intervention. Control group participants received conventional care and health education. At baseline, falls history was taken. Fall recurrence was monitored prospectively using monthly fall diaries for 12 months.
