Abstract

The social and cultural environments and traditions of two villages-Karang Ploso, Indonesia, and Mayush, Peru-are used to interpret pre- and post-flood responses. Although marginalization may render many Third World populations more vulnerable to potential disasters, case study materials based on these two responses suggest that some victims in these types of villages may better be able to recover from such disasters than many within more developed countries.
