Abstract

Definitional and methodological issues related to physical neglect and abuse, sexual abuse and psychological maltreatment are raised, followed by discussion of sequelae for each type of abuse that is relevant for developing on understanding of the multiply victimized child. Some research of multiply victimized children is presented along with case examples. While evidence is mixed, it appears that multiple victimization places children at greater risk for maladaptation. More fine-grained assessment and conceptual analysis are needed to identify which and how many types of psychological abuse tend to co-occur with physical and sexual maltreatment.
