Abstract

A significant number of injuries occur each year as a result of human impact with glass doors, panels and windows glazed with ordinary (i.e. annealed) glass. These injuries can be minimized if safety glazing is used, but there are a number of matters which need examination in deciding whether or not its use should be made mandatory in building codes. Two aspects of this problem are dealt with in the paper, viz: 1. (i) the stresses induced in glass panels subject to impact loading, and2. (ii) the basis upon which safety levels should be determined.
