Abstract

The effective design of structures to resist applied meteorological loads, acting both singly and in combination, is clearly an extremely important topic in building design and construction, for, the public, not unexpectedly, demand a high level of competence in all matters affecting public safety. A fundamental task for the building designer is to identify the point of balance in structural design, where the economic penalties of overdesign for meteorological loads are balanced properly against the safety risks implied in underdesign against such meteorological extremes. It is very difficult to identify this point of balance. This article attemps to clarify some of the basic principles which must be considered in selecting meteorological data for loading studies.
