Abstract

This study analyzes how modern family ideology allowed men's double-sided desire, based on written by Choi, Naewoo, who had wife and concubine during the modern period of Korea. Concubinage in Changpyeon Diary was the realization of power of patriarchy rather than a man's deviant desire, at a time when a monogamy did not work as a social norm. That is because the modern family in Korea was based on hierarchical marital relation and intergenerational relation, not on the affection and egalitarianism. However, an emphasis on hierarchical marital relation brought about concubine, adultery, cheating, and other marital infidelity, causing unstable family relation. "Strong patriarchy" advocated by Choi meant economic ability to support family members in context, but focused on exercise of violence and authority. This thoroughly coincided with development dictatorship that intended to make strong male characters suitable for a capitalist developing country. The economic ability to support family members was roughly equivalent to patriarchical power. Against this background, moral incompetence like concubinage, inability to communicate and dependence on violence, and considering children as the other under the epic of development focusing on goals, diligence and achievement were not disqualification for manliness and patriarchy. Without regret and reflection, the narrative of Choi closely related to alliance or loyalty among males who wanted to become the subject in development and sexuality structure in Changpyeong-ri, such as eruption of masculinity that made women become the other. Sexual offenses in Changpyeong-ri were committed under the connivence of patriarchy and developmentalism without any punishment, enhancing hegemonical masculinity under the developmentalism.
