Abstract

Excessive torques are often imposed on p.t.o. drivelines when starting up high inertia agricultural machines. This is particularly true where the factor is fitted with a fast response, hydraulically engaged p.t.o. clutch and the problem has caused growing concern as machine sizes and power levels have increased. A theoretical analysis of a simplified tractor and machine driveline shows that overload protection can be obtained by suitable modulation of the torque rise of the tractor p.t.o. clutch or by fitting a simple slip clutch in the driveline. Various modulation characteristics are examined using a computer model of the driveline and simple expressions are derived to predict slip clutch performance.
