Abstract

The Kambô ceremony is a purification ritual that began in South America. Poison extracted from the Amazonian giant leaf frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor) is applied transdermally to areas of the skin that are burned with a heated stick. The poisoning induces brief but intense vomitimg and is thought to purify the body, increase strength, improve sexual stamina, and induce spiritual cleansing.
