Abstract

OBJECTIVES: The suicide and drinking problems in adolescents are increasing every year, and it is known that suicide is related to drinking. This study aim to identify the relationship between heavy drinking experience (HDE) and suicide attempts in Korean adolescents.

METHODS: The Ninth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) was used for analysis, 2013. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify the relationship between HDE and suicide attempts, the relationship between HDE and suicide attempts in middle and high school students stratified by age.

RESULTS: The relationship between HDE and attempted suicide was highly related to Non-HDE and suicide attempts in the case of HDE. HDE was associated with suicide attempts in Male aged 12 or 13(OR=3.97, 95% CI: 1.57-10.03) and in female aged 15 (OR=2.66, 95% CI: 1.79-3.96).

CONCLUSION: HDE was important factor related to suicide attempts in adolescents. In order to reduce the suicide attempt, it is necessary to educate the youth about the regulation of HDE and the prevention of drinking.
