Abstract

What makes a city bicycle-friendly? How can a city become more bicycle-friendly? Seattle has twice been voted the best city for bicycling in the United States. Other cities renowned for bicycling have similar characteristics that distinguish them from cities considered less conductive to bicycling. A detailed survey of bicycle professionals has been carried out, and the criteria for judging the 10 best cities for bicycling were researched. Three key ingredients for success are identified, and their applicability to cities across the United States and elsewhere is explored.
