Abstract

Experiment to evaluate the vision interruption apparatus as a method of measuring the sensitivity of drivers to degraded visibility conditions in steering and control tasks. Six drivers were required to negotiate a slalom course at an automatically controlled speed (30 or 45 mph) while wearing goggles fitted with various neutral-density filters and a motorcycle helmet with a gas piston-operated translucent face shield. The face shield could be moved from its normally occluding position for a one-half -sec look.
