Abstract

Human factor ranks first among causes of road accidents. Analyzing personality factors of drivers and pedestrians, as well as structuring peculiarities of their systematic interaction made it possible to develop a morphological model of their potential reliability. One of the main areas in improving traffic safety is reduction of accident risks determined by the "road and its environment" factor. The paper proposes a number of organizational and technical measures to improve safety of complex road junctions, including use of redundant road markings. Obviously, one of the issues demanding attention is traffic management at controlled intersections in populated areas. The standards used to calculate parameters of safe traffic have become obsolete. A new methodology shall be based on the whole set of safe traffic patterns differing by options of conflict settlement with account for permissible maneuvers and existing limitations and restrictions. To ensure the commonality of recommendations made, the methodology shall cover the following sets: types of road junctions; methods of traffic management; types and number of conflict points; types of traffic management equipment; types of traffic safety assessment criteria. Besides, there are local limitations and restrictions used when adapting theoretical calculations in the real world. All of this makes the task poorly structured and requiring continuous testing of the proposed solutions, which can be ensured by means of simulation modeling. It is also difficult to assess situations at uncontrolled intersections. Installing corresponding road signs on special supports and painting special markings contribute to impartial assessment of traffic situations by road users, while the time reserve created allows making correct decisions. Developed recommendations will allow reducing accident risks and improving traffic safety.
