Abstract

The paper analyzes the history of studying styles in psychology in Russia and in the West. A special emphasis is placed on the methodology of studying styles that prevailed in Russian psychology since the 1950s, in which the environment was considered isotropic, the activity and style were assumed to be certain constants, and the process of developing style was examined separately from the experience gained by subject through engaging in activities in various areas.The paper describes results of an empirical research focused on studying relations between individual components of activity styles that develop in a person in various life domains. The work is based on two methods developed by the authors: a questionnaire titled "Individual Style of Driving Activity" (ISDA) tested for validity and reliability, and a pilot questionnaire. The ISDA questionnaire assesses the features of memorizing and storing information about routes, traffic patterns at various intersections, traffic signs on specific routes and specifics of their location, as well as the peculiarities of obtaining, perceiving and processing information directly received while driving.The pilot questionnaire is aimed at determining the degree of similarity in styles of test subject activities in various areas. The work with the pilot questionnaire comprised two stages. The first version of the questionnaire contained 10 questions, the second one was expanded to 17 questions, and the final version comprised 8 questions selected based on the evaluation of reliability using the Cronbach's alpha measurement scale. Research results, which demonstrate the existence of relation between individual styles of activities in various areas and, therefore, can become the basis for designing an efficient activity style (helping to maintain an appropriate level of activities' reliability at the optimal psychophysiological efforts) for student drivers, are presented.
