Abstract

First, we briefly outline the state of research in traffic congestion and existing approaches towards the classification of congestion patterns. We summarize the methodology and results of our analysis of the spatiotemporal dynamics of traffic flow on the A12 and A13 motorways in Austria in 2016 based on cross-sectional count data. Built on that research, we introduce a different approach consisting in the analysis of separate traffic lanes. We compare the new lane-specific results with the previous aggregated ones and discuss the differences. We postulate that the new suggested approach provides better insights into the congestions patterns and their causes on alpine motorways and might be used to evaluate traffic management measures more accurately and reliably than the standard technique.
