Abstract

Grim and colleagues' case report was thought provoking, but the suggested relationship between horsetail and acute hyponatremia seems circumstantial. The adverse event took place 8 hours after the suspected ingestion of wild horsetail and was not identified in the emergency department 6 hours earlier. Because no laboratory test is able to confirm the presence of horsetail in body fluid, the case hinges on the patient's ability to properly identify Equisetum species in her local woods after attending a course on edible plants.
