Abstract

Highlights
• Impaired self-concept and self-injury are related.

• There is a need to develop psychotherapeutic approaches targeting self-concept.

• There is a need to fully appreciate what constitutes an adaptive self-concept, in order not to replace one impaired form of self-concept with another (that is perhaps even more maladaptive).

• Wisdom-based Buddhist-derived approaches (second-generation of mindfulness-based interventions) focus on deconstructing the mistaken belief regarding the inherent existence of a self in order to develop a more valid form of Self-identification.
