Abstract

OBJECTIVE To investigate the trend of accidental fall mortality of residents in Pudong New Area of Shanghai from 1995 to 2018, and quantitatively estimate the influencing factors to provide a reference for the establishment of corresponding intervention measures.

METHODS Records of accidental falls of Pudong New Area in Shanghai from 1995 to 2018 were derived from data of vital registration system. Crude mortality and age standardized rate(ASR) of accidental fall were calculated. The annual percent change(APC) was estimated to describe the changing trend of accidental fall mortality. The differential decomposition method was applied to estimate the contribution of demographic factors to the change of accidental fall mortality.

RESULTS The crude mortality and standardized mortality of accidental fall in Pudong New Area between 1995 and 2018 were 12.64/100 000 and 5.52/100 000, respectively. The crude mortality of accidental fall during the 24 years showed an increasing trend year by year(APC=1.36%, Z=4.064, P<0.001), while the data showed a downward trend on age standardized rate(ASR) of death(APC=-2.82%, Z=-7.724, P<0.001). The increase in crude mortality of accidental fall was mainly due to demographic change. The contribution proportions of the population aging to the mortality were 40.76% in whole population,46.57% in the males, and 36.00% in the females.

CONCLUSION The crude accidental fall mortality in Pudong New Area in 1995-2018 increased year by year. Population aging was one of the main factors. The elderly population should be the focus of the accidental fall intervention.
