Abstract

The 1992 FISH Workshop brought stakeholders together to act in concert to save the lives of fishers.6 Myers ML, Klatt ML, Eds. Proceedings of the National Fishing Industry Safety and Health Workshop. Cincinnati, OH: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. DHHS (NIOSH) Publication No. 94-109; Jan 1994.

Over the years, by targeting prevention based on epidemiology and cooperative interventions, the program became a model for public health by reducing fishing-related fatalities in Alaskan waters by 43% from the 1990–1999 to the 2000–2009 decades.7 Lincoln JM, O’Connor MB, Retzer KD, et al. Occupational fatalties in Alaska: Two decades of progress, 1990-1999 and 2000-2009. J Saf Res. 2013; 44:105–110. DOI:10.1016/j.jsr.2012.08.023

In 2000, a series of International Fishing Industry Safety and Health Conferences (IFISH) started in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.8 Lincoln JM, Hudson DS, Conway GA, Pescatore R Proceedings of the International Fishing Industry Safety and Health Conference. In 2018, IFISH5 convened in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, which expanded to include the growing industry of aquaculture. Aquaculture included fresh water aquafarming of fish and other waterborne animals and plants as well as maricuture, which relates to farming at sea. Mariculture is now expanding from coastal areas into offshore operations where hazards abound.13 Holen SM, Utne IB, Holmen IM, Aasjord H. Occupational safety in aquaculture – Part 2: Fatalities in Norway 1982–2015. Mar Policy. Oct 2018;96:193–199. doi:10.1016/j.marpol.2017.08.005.

At the June 2018 Fifth International Fishing Industry Safety and Health Conference (IFISH5), Jennifer M. Lincoln presented, “What I’ve learned about fishing safety from listening to fishermen.” She said they want their work to be safe as well as relevant and practical.14 Lincoln JM What I’ve learned about fishing safety from listening to fishermen. Fifth International Fishing Industry Safety and Health Conference (IFISH5). June 11-13, 2018, Canada, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

IFISH5 also addressed aquaculture, and initial research that explored prevention among workers in aquaculture was presented in a keynote address at IFISH5. The research focused on aquafarmer innovations for safety that could be shared more broadly and as existing proofs of concepts.../p>
