Abstract

The incidence of sports injuries has been reported to reach ~26 and 34 injuries per 1000 persons in the USA and the European Union, respectively, with the majority of these injuries occurring in the lower extremity (eg, ankle and knee sprains, hamstring strains, ACL tears). Sports injuries have important negative physical, psychological and medical consequences for the athlete, as well as technical, tactical and economical consequences for the team.
