Abstract

Highlights
• Insomnia is a risk factor for suicide, both in the short term and the long term.

• Hopelessness mediates much of the effect of insomnia on suicide.

• Some persons with insomnia experience a specific type of hopelessness as reflected in the dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep scale.

• Treatment of insomnia may be a path towards mitigating suicidal ideation.
