Abstract

Trams are making a comeback but this has caused some concern within the cycling community. There may be loss of existing bus lanes or cycle lanes leading to increased congestion on the remaining parts of the carriageway. And, perhaps the most important, there is the accident potential of skidding on the tracks or getting a wheel caught in the tram rails. There can be benefits to cyclists but if these are to be achieved it is imperative that cycling aspects are considered from the outset. When the design is complete it may be too late to make it significantly cycle friendly.
