Abstract

In 1987, a pedestrian promontory was introduced at a light-controlled pedestrian crossing on Upper Parliament Street, one of Nottingham's busiest thoroughfares. The promontory was designed to increase pedestrian conspicuity and safety at a location which had a particularly high pedestrian accident concentration. It has been found that the introduction of this promontory has resulted in an accident saving of three pedestrian accidents per year without diminishing the street's traffic capacity. Since the scheme proved successful, a second promontory was introduced at another site in Nottingham with conditions similar to those at Upper Parliament Street.
