Abstract

In this article, the authors test twenty-six motorcycles to determine the drag factor for a motorcycle sliding on its side. They use three different methodologies for testing: the first test method involves motorcycles already on their sides before being pulled across the pavement, while the other two methods involve the motorcycles falling to the pavement before sliding. Thirty-six pull tests are conducted using nine test motorcycles; drop tests are conducted on twelve motorcycles; and clamp tests are performed on five motorcycles. Pull tests are found to be easiest to perform, while clamp and drop methods better represent the real-world experience of a motorcycle dropping to the pavement before sliding.
